It’s always been an honor to be officially associated myself with any Wikipedia event. I am really fortunate enough that many times I had been officially associated with Wikipedia events. Not only that, I was also a co-organizer of Wikipedia Takes Kolkata-VI photo walk. It was one-day photo scavenging event, conducted here in Kolkata this year. Wiki is not only special for me, also very close to my heart. So, whenever there is a call from Wikipedia family, my first priority have always been Wiki.

January, this year I came to know about this annual conference, TTT 2017 (Train-The-Trainer) from Tito Dutta of CIS, and that would be held in Bangalore. That was not sufficed but the actual surprise was stored somewhere for me. I had little idea about Wiki TTT because I have already attended mini TTT and mini MWT sessions here in Kolkata this year and same also been organized by Tito along with the help of talented Wikipedian Mourya and Butterfly Ananya. It was a really fabulous moment for me when I received the invitation mail along with the air tickets.

Wikipedia TTT 2017 -Here, I would like to tell you about what TTT 2017 (Train-The-Trainer) conference was all about. This would be helpful for you to understand what TTT is? TTT is basically a 3 days residential Wikipedia workshop cum conference to groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community. It held every year and organized by CIS-A2K. This year it was the fourth edition of it. If I stretch little further, they select two Wikipedians from each Indic language community for participation. It has been organized in Bangalore city from the beginning and the only venue gets changed every year. This edition of TTT was scheduled on 20-22 February 2017, at Jaya Mahal Palace Hotel. More importantly, Tito Dutta, this person from CIS was the responsible person to organize this grand and such a big event this year. Obviously, behind him had a rock solid team.

Day 0/0 – Ibrahim from Bangladesh Wikipedia, reached Kolkata by 19th evening and his flight to Bangalore was on next day morning with me. He had no proper arrangement in Kolkata for his stay. Tito has a beautiful power to convince and manage someone. He managed me somehow and gave me the responsibility to arrange something for Ibrahim. So, I went to Airport to bring him and he stayed at my residence for that night. Although, I took Ibrahim to nearby places to show him some heritages of Kolkata. We became friends before the conference. On 20th early morning, we left Kolkata for Bangalore. At Bangalore Airport I met Dr.Diptangshu Das for the first time. CIS had arranged a car for us and we three clubbed together, reached Jayamahal Palace hotel in the late afternoon. We were late due to a flight delay.

Organizers had arranged an Intro session in the evening at Jayamahal conference room. From the moment I stepped inside the huge conference room, I was extremely nervous to see the hall, full of participants. I was thinking how it would be possible for me to interact with them and how could I managed to take photographs. Being a Wikipedian I must say, it’s truly a tough job to talk in front of Wikipedians. Although, I’ve been into photography since I was a teenager. Since I got my first camera became obsessed with photography. I have a faith that my photography makes people happy and feel emotion. So, I started capturing the moments and as well as participating in all the activities simultaneously. After such a beautiful evening, I came to know from Tito, my passion for photography, made some people annoyed.

Day 01 – Sharp 9:30 AM, I reached the hall. The first session was introduction followed by icebreaker activities and on my turn, I talked about my Wikipedia projects, also about some future projects. There were many sessions planned for the day but Tito’s on event planning, Ashwin’s Essentials of conducting an event, Manasa and Pavan’s grant structure, Tanveer’s Global metrics and WCI presentation of Dr. Manavpreet were outstanding. I do not mean other sessions were not so good but equally good. Honestly speaking, all the sessions just enriched me. They planned and executed each session so well with hands-on activities that made it so interesting, meaningful and enriching.

The interaction with other Wikipedians during Tea Break and Lunch Break and during leisure time after the end of the day one conference were also enriching. Interaction and exchanging ideas, the experience is always good to uplift yourself. But the best part of this conference was we were all from diverse background and that at least helped me so much to widen my thought process. One more thing, before this conference, the organizers told each participant to bring popular sweets of their respective state. It was a wonderful experience and scope to taste sweets from the different states of our country. I ate so much of sweets but what Frederick Noronha brought from Goa was best of the lot apart from sweets of my city.

Day 02 – We started off the second day with a field trip to Cubbon Park. Before I narrate the day, would like to share a small incident. Before we leave for Cubbon Park, Tanveer called me and asked me to change my hotel room. I asked him about the reason for the change but he answered me, it’s a routine process. But this was not the actual reason because I know the reason. I was not at all surprised, It was quite obvious and I was prepared for it. Because I am aware of my snoring habit. My room partner for the day one was Balaji Jagathees and he couldn’t bear my snoring.

Although, the bus was ready to move to Cubbon park and we were super excited. This session was on contributing to those article on biodiversity in Wikipedia and it was conducted by Shyamal and Ashwin. But honestly speaking I had no idea about spiders, trees, ants or many more things which were included in this session. Being a nature lover it was a good scope for me to learn about nature but unfortunately, due to lack of knowledge on this subject, I lost interest in this session. I found that many participants left the place and went to see the nearby attraction of Bangalore. Sorry, Shyamal and Ashwin, I like to confess here, I have also gone to see the Vidhana Soudha of Karnataka in the middle of the session. It was fun and very tiring day.

Day 03 – Topics were nitty gritty. The Masterclass III consists of many things, panel discussion on Thematic groups and user groups, Wikipedia Commons by Shyamal, Wikisource by Sumita Roy, Gender Gap Research and Women in Red by Elisa Ting-Yi Chang, WikiProject India in En:WP, Wikipedia Asian Month, 100 Wiki Days, Wiki Loves Food, Village Project, Wikimedia Education Program and Wikimania by Subhashish. etc. There were so many times that I finally was able to understand things that I really wanted to know.

When the second day came to a close and it was time to leave. I wasn’t sad but felt an overwhelming feeling of support and encouragement from everyone from the participants to organizers. After the dinner, most of them left out and few stayed back to attend MWT2017. I finished my dinner and supposed to follow my own travel plan. I left my laptop and some belongings with Tito, as I had to get back once again to Bangalore. As soon as I walked outside, I sat in the car for a minute… closed my eyes and started thinking of how amazing and exuberant experience it was. The experience that I had been looking forward for years. I took a moment to think about my travel plan to Hampi, this suddenly engrossed me.

It was really special to be in Wikipedia’s conference alongside other Wikipedians from all over the country and Wikipedian from neighboring country. We bonded over those three days. We laughed together, exchange ideas, and even got super real with each other. We supported each other when someone spoke or even argued with them. Sometimes they shared personal stories. Some offered ideas and suggestions when people asked for advice and in fact, I also advised some of them. The most memorable moment for me was when I interviewed by Frederick Noronha regarding my work and it was the first interview of my life. It was really just really outstanding place to be in. I didn’t take pages and pages of notes, all I can say it enriched me in true sense. I had spent many excellent moments or can say that totally makes sense” moments. Light bulbs going off in my head, and firecrackers were exploding with ideas. Now, I think the conference was absolutely necessary for me to grow my Wiki Skills.

Special Thanks – Tito Dutta Thank you so much from the core of my heart,
Sumita Di Thank you so much, you are always ready to help anyone.
Ibrahim missing your smile and thanks for helping me to open my eyes.
Dr.Diptangshu Thank you so much for exchanging some brilliant ideas.

Royson, Tanveer, Pavan Santosh, Manasa, Ting-Yi, Fredrick Noronha, Ashwin Baindur, Sailesh Patnaik and Dr. Aarya Joshi.

West Bengal Wiki Community’s Participation in Wikipedia Loves Monuments Project

Wikipedia Loves Monuments 2016

Wikipedia Loves Monuments 2016 in West Bengal Community
Wikipedia Loves Monuments” one month long photography contest cum Photo drive has been organized by Wikipedia in the month of September 2016, internationally, to photograph those monuments world wide whose photos are not present in the Wiki repository. Like other countries, Wikipedia India Chapter also took part in this grand project. Wikipedian Santanu Chandra informed us about WLM project in a monthly meeting of Wikipedia WB community and unanimously agreed upon to participate in this grand event.

The main focus of the project was to photographed those monuments, whose photos are not present in the Wikipedia repository and also to encourage for creating new articles from captured photographs. In community meeting it has been decided, Sumit Surai would select the place and as well as prepare the list of monuments of that place to be photographed for WLM. In the process of selection, he would have to consider those monuments whose photos are not present in Wiki’s ‘List of Monuments of National Importance in West Bengal’ and as well in the ‘List of State Protected Monuments in West Bengal’. On the next Wikipedia meeting, he placed his proposal for the monuments of Burdwan and Ambika Kalna along with a detailed itinerary. Initially, we decided to visit there with a large group of Wikipedian photographers but unfortunately due to some internal technical issues we had to postponed the plan. Finally, a small group has been formed consists of five person including me and the date of journey was finalized as on 24th September 2016 for WLM.

Day 1
Just one day before the journey, I informed Sumit about my eye infection and told him that I might not join them. But he insisted and as usual I got convinced. On early morning of 24th I reached Howrah by 6:45am and Sumit joined me after few minutes. Both of us waiting for Santanu Da, Sujay and Kalyan and by that time I started photographing the surrounding areas of Howrah station. They reached Howrah in time and joined us. Although, I, Kalyan, Sumit, Santanu Da and Sujay finally boarded a local train at 8am for Ambika Kalna. We reached there around 10am and according to our plan we went to Raj Bari temple Complex at first. In the afternoon, a new Wikipedian from Burdwan Prithwish Jash joined us. During the day, rain and low light every so often spoiled some of our plans. Although, we managed to take photograph of almost all major temples in Kalna. It was also in our agenda to capture maximum number of Terracotta panels of every individual temple. Finally, we have succeeded to some extent to capture maximum number of Terracotta panels with limited resources and time. Here is the list of temples, we photographed on the first day.

Stretching Horizon – Wiki Outreach
I and Sumit, always keep in mind to do some offline work for Wikipedia that may not bring instant or immediate result but somehow will help in future. That’s why both of us were in search for information of lesser known heritages of the district Burdwan. Also, in search for new involvement or contributors from local scholars. In between, Sumit collected the phone number of a local Historian Sidheswar Achariyya. At the late evening of that day I called him for fixing up a meeting with him. Initially, he refused to meet us because he was suffering due to old age issues. Fortunately, I managed to convince him and fixed a meeting with him on the next day at 9am at his residence. He is working with the history of Burdwan district especially Kalna over a long period of time and also one of the founder member of Kalna Mahakuma Itihas O Puratattwa Charcha Kendra. He wrote many books on the history of Kalna. It was in my mind that he would be a helpful source for future for developing existing and creating new unique articles for Bengali Wikipedia.

Day 2
All woke by 6am and left the guest house early to photograph Nava-Kailasha Temple. We spend some time there and went to Gopalji Temple. We had fixed a meeting with Sidheswar Achariyya and accordingly went to his place after Gopalji Temple. In between, a small incident happened just after we left Gopalji Temple and on the way to Sidheswar Achariyya’s house. Basically, my presence is enough for …………. and disaster is inevitable. Quite naturally I made a disaster that day. We hired a Toto (Toto is a 3 wheeler battery operated vehicle) and suddenly, a wish was popup in my mind to drive the Toto. Initial 1 or 2 minutes of driving was okay but suddenly I loose control over the vehicle. Even the driver could not control the vehicle as well and we hit the wall of a house. This has broken the front wheel axle of the Toto and also damaged the main water supply pipeline of the house. Although, managed well and I had to pay an amount from my personal account for the sin. This incident made me serious for the time being. Now, I would love to tell, I am not really very sorry or ashamed what I have done that day because this incident made our tour memorable. Even I have named the incident as “Bordhomane Barabari” or “Kalnai Kelo”.

We reached at his residence in time and he gladly welcomed us. I started the discussion with a introduction of WLM project to him and also discussed about the heritages of the district. We learned some historical facts about Kalna from him that was really new to us. Here would like to mention, everybody attended the meeting except Kalyan. When we came out from his house, discovered Kalyan was taking a nap outside his house. Although, we purchased some of his books from him and he suggested us to meet Biswajit Gain, a local photographer and historian. Achariyya Ji fixed a meeting in between Biswajit Gain and us at the guest house where we stayed. The meeting was fruitful in perspective of outreach. We went back to our guest house to meet Biswajit Gain. Meeting with Biswajit Gain was also came out very fruitful as he showed interest to contribute and interested in workshop at Kalna.

After the small break for refreshment we went to Baidyapur to photograph one state and one National protected monuments. Baidyapur which is situated 16 Km away from Kalna. Other than these two there were many ancient temples which were not in our list. Still, covered most of the temples for creating future articles and for documentation purpose. Around 3Pm we closed the chapter of Baidyapur and reached to nearby bus stand to go to Burdwan via Bainchi. There were no frequent bus service for Bainchi and we had to wait there. After waiting for half an hour discovered a overcrowded bus and there were absolutely no place inside the bus. Four of us except Sumit, climb up the roof of the bus and settled ourselves. Sumit forcefully boarded inside the bus and we went to Bainchi. Then we had plan to go to Burdwan from Bainchi and other two places. But it was completely impractical matter to cover all those places in two days. It was drizzling when we reached to Bainchi station and condition of sun light was too poor. So, we took the decision to postponed our Burdwan Plan and end the WLM tour. Boarded a local train from Baichi for Kolkata.

//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.jsWikipedia is so dynamic in true sense and those who are associated with Wikipedia they are also very dynamic, again Wikipedia Kolkata Chapter proved the same yesterday. Wikipedia Kolkata Chapter and Oxford Book Store are jointly organized a workshop #Wikilearnopedia on 23rd August at Oxford Bookstore,Kolkata. This workshop was intended to attract more and more people to contribute to Wikipedia, to have new Wikipedians, this kind of initiative is very much required. Being a contributor to Wikipedia, I must thank the authority of Oxford bookstore for providing the venue to Wikipedia Kolkata Chapter and as well as the hospitality they provided during the workshop, it is really good. Taking part of any Wikipedia Events, always exuberant experience and yesterday it was like an get together for me.

The topics of the workshop was really unique and really helpful for new Wikipedians, topics like creating a new article in Wikipedia, how to give references to an article and uploading images in Wikipedia Commons nicely explained by Rangan Datta. Second part of the session was nicely took over by Santanu Chandra and Sujay Chandra on Wikitionary and Wikisource. What I have found interesting in the whole workshop, the involvements of new participants are commendable and participation of women are raised to some extent. This workshop was grand success and to make it grand success the efforts of Wikipedians of Kolkata chapter are commendable.

Some people worked so hard to make it happened and I would like to mention some of them, Sukanta Pal for providing Tech-Support, Santanu Chandra, Sujay Chandra, Kalyan Sarkar,Rangan Datta and photographer Biswarup Ganguli and special thanks to Subhadip Mukherjee. I know Subhadip Mukherjee for more than one year because I read Subhadip’s blog regularly but meet him for the first time and it was indeed a nice moments for me, actually he is an official part of Oxford Bookstore. Eminent journalist Gautam Basu Mallick was there and his impromptu speech on improving quality of Wikipedia Articles was excellent.

I was just waiting for the event to occur because it really gave me a wonderful exuberant experience last time with the Wikipedia/Wikimedia Takes Kolkata 3 event. Suddenly, last week of November I got an invitation form Wikipedia in Facebook that again they are conducting Wikipedia Takes Kolkata 4 photo scavenging event here in Kolkata. But this time, photo scavenging will be in the southern part of Kolkata that is Tollygunge. Tollygunge is already famous outside for Bengali Films but for this time it will be more famous for Temples, Marvelous Architectures and History. So our rendezvous was Tollygunge Phari (It is a famous Tollygunge Crossing).
